# Mics and Allocations

Each numbered mic in StageMic represents a physical radio pack that can move between wearers during the show.

An allocation records which character is assigned that mic in a particular scene.

## Numbered mics

Set the number of mics in **Production setup**.

StageMic creates numbered mics from `1` to the number entered. Mics do not need individual names.

Use a numbering scheme that your crew can match to the physical packs.

Increasing the count preserves existing allocations. Reducing it removes the highest-numbered mics and their allocations after confirmation.

## Making an allocation

In the **Mic plot**:

1. Find the row for the mic.
2. Find the column for the scene.
3. Choose a character from the cell’s dropdown.

The Character and Actor plots update from the same allocation data.

If the character is linked to an actor, StageMic uses that link to identify the wearer.

## Blank cells

A blank allocation means no wearer has been specified for that mic in that scene.

It does not explicitly record a return to the mic table.

Blank scenes can provide a gap in which a handover is placed. StageMic compares the surrounding assignments to detect a change of wearer.

For example:

<table>
  <colgroup>
    <col width="100" />

    <col width="168" />

    <col width="203" />

    <col width="224" />
  </colgroup>

  <thead>
    <tr>
      <th>Mic</th>
      <th>Scene 1</th>
      <th>Scene 2</th>
      <th>Scene 3</th>
    </tr>
  </thead>

  <tbody>
    <tr>
      <td>1</td>
      <td>John</td>
      <td><Tooltip tip="The handover will be placed here">Unassigned</Tooltip></td>
      <td>Alice</td>
    </tr>
  </tbody>
</table>

StageMic places the handover in Scene 2, the first unassigned scene after John’s allocation.

## Mic table

Choose **Mic table** when you want to record an explicit return to or collection from the table.

Unlike a blank cell, it identifies a specific destination between wearers.

See [Mic Table](/mic-table).

## Filling forward

The **→** button copies a selected wearer into following blank scenes.

It stops before the next existing assignment, including a Mic table assignment.

This is useful for actors who keep the same mic for a long section of the show.

See [Filling Allocations Forward](/filling-allocations-forward).

## Clearing a mic

Click a mic number in the Mic plot to clear that mic’s allocations across the show, after confirmation.

To clear one scene only, choose the unassigned option in that cell.

## Multiple mics

StageMic flags cases where the same character or linked actor has multiple mics in one scene.

If this is deliberate, mark the allocation as intentional. Both mics remain in the plot.

See [Conflicts and Intentional Double-Mic'ing](/conflicts-and-intentional-double-mic-ing).
