# Production Setup

Production setup defines the people, scenes and mics used in your show.

You can return to this page at any time to make changes. Changes are automatically applied.

## Production name

Enter the name of your production in **Production name**.

The name appears in the editor, backstage displays and printed reports.

It does not need to be the same as the file name.

## Characters

Characters are the roles you assign to mics.

To add a character:

1. Enter a name in the Characters section.
2. Press <kbd>Enter</kbd> or select **Add character**.

The input remains available so you can continue entering the cast using the keyboard.

Character names must be unique within the show.

Each character’s row provides controls to:

* Rename the character.
* Choose the actor playing it.
* Move it up or down.
* Remove it.

## Actors

Actors identify the people playing your characters.

To add an actor:

1. Enter their name in the Actors section.
2. Press <kbd>Enter</kbd> or select **Add actor**.

Then choose that actor beside each character they play.

One actor can be linked to several characters. Those characters share a row in the Actor plot.

You can rename, reorder or remove actors using their row controls.

## Scenes

To add a scene:

1. Enter its name in the Scenes section.
2. Press <kbd>Enter</kbd> or select **Add scene**.

Scenes are added in production order. Use the up and down controls to adjust that order.

Scene names can be numbers, titles or other useful labels. Include an interval or other transition as a scene if you want to plot allocations during it.

Renaming and reordering scenes keeps their allocations attached.

## Radio packs

Enter the total number of mics and press <kbd>Enter</kbd> or select **Set mic count**.

StageMic creates numbered mics from `1` to the number entered.

Increasing the count keeps the existing allocations and adds more mics. Reducing it removes the highest-numbered mics and their allocations after confirmation.

## Incomplete-handover alerts

Enable **Alert me about handovers not marked complete** if you want warnings when advancing from a scene with pending handovers.

This setting is off by default and is saved with the show.

Alerts apply when moving forward exactly one scene. They do not stop scene advancement or interrupt backstage displays.

See [Incomplete Handover Alerts](/incomplete-handover-alerts).

## After setup

Open the **Mic plot** to begin assigning characters to mics.

You do not need to finish every part of Production setup first. You can add actors, adjust scenes and expand the mic count as the plot develops.
