# Saving, Autosaving, and Loading

StageMic automatically saves your current show as you work. You can also save separate `.mic` files for backups, sharing and use on another computer.

## Autosave

Changes made in the editor are automatically written to StageMic’s local autosave file.

When StageMic next opens, it restores the autosaved show.

Autosave is stored in the application-data folder on the controlling computer. It is separate from any `.mic` files you save yourself.

## Save

Select **Save**, choose a filename and location, then confirm the save.

This creates or replaces a `.mic` file containing the current show.

**Autosave does not continuously update that separate file.** Select Save again when you want to update your saved copy.

Saving separate files is useful for:

* Keeping a backup before substantial changes.
* Recording a rehearsal or performance version.
* Sending the plot to another StageMic user.
* Moving the show to another computer.

## Load

Select **Load** and choose a `.mic` file.

Before replacing the current show, StageMic asks:

> **Save the current show before opening another?**

You can choose to:

* Save the current show, then open the selected file.
* Open the selected file without saving a separate copy of the current show.
* Cancel and keep the current show open.

If you choose to save but cancel the save dialog, StageMic does not replace the current show. A failed save also stops the replacement.

The same protection applies when opening a show through the operating system.

## New

Select **New** to create a blank show.

StageMic asks whether you want to save the current show first. You can save and continue, continue without saving, or cancel.

Once the blank show becomes the current show, autosave follows that new show. Save anything you want to keep before replacing it.

## Autosave and backups

Autosave keeps the current state of your work. It does not provide a list of earlier versions to restore.

For example, deleting an allocation is a change that autosave will also record. A separate saved copy gives you a point to return to.

A useful routine is to save a named backup:

* Before a major revision.
* Before installing an update.
* Before moving the show to another computer.
* Once the plot is agreed for a performance.

## After loading

Check the production name, scene order and allocations.

Loading a show does not import another computer’s network settings, Crew password or licence activation. Handover completion records are also stored separately.
