StageMic separates the role in the show from the person playing it. A character is assigned to a mic in the plot. An actor is linked to one or more characters in Production setup.

Characters

Create a character for each role you need to allocate a mic to. A character can be a named dramatic role, an ensemble role or another useful label, such as Narrator or Ensemble 3. Characters appear as allocation choices in the Mic plot and as rows in the Character plot. Character names must be unique within the show.

Actors

Actors represent the people wearing the mics. Linking characters to actors allows StageMic to:
  • Group their characters in the Actor plot.
  • Display actor names prominently in backstage handovers.
  • Identify allocations involving the same person.
  • Produce individual actor reports.
You can build a plot without actor links, but StageMic then has no information about who physically wears each mic.

Linking characters to actors

In Production setup:
  1. Add the actor to the Actors list.
  2. Find the character in the Characters list.
  3. Choose the actor from that character’s dropdown.
Each character can be linked to one actor. One actor can be linked to several characters.

Actors playing multiple characters

If an actor plays several characters, link all those characters to the same actor. Their allocations appear together in the Actor plot. A change of character on the same mic does not create a handover when both characters are linked to the same actor. The wearer has not changed. If those characters are allocated different mics in the same scene, StageMic flags the multiple allocation for review. You can mark it as intentional where appropriate.

Characters without actors

Unlinked characters still work in the Mic and Character plots. They appear separately in the Actor plot, labelled as having no actor assigned. They are not selectable as actors in the individual actor report picker. Link them to actors if you want named actor reports and actor-based handover information.

Editing names and order

Characters and actors can be renamed and reordered in Production setup. Use these controls rather than deleting and recreating an entry when you only want to change its name. After changing actor links, review the detected swaps and any multiple-mic warnings. StageMic’s understanding of the physical wearer may have changed.
